MacDonald was named after John A. MacDonald, a controversial Canadian historical figure. Several groups, especially Canadian First Nations people who settled in Keclia during the interwar period, have lobbied for the name to be changed. However, the Keclian Nahuatl people, the original settlers of Keclia, accept the MacDonald name, as the previous German name, "Kaiserstadt", could also be considered politically incorrect (due to associations with Imperial Germany, which massacred Nahuatl people during the colonial era), and MacDonald is located in an area where the Nahuatl never settled (most Mayan settlements in Keclia were in coastal areas, and MacDonald is located inland).
